Timber Creek Stables started out in 1936 as a seed corn drying facility,
drying the historic “Funks G” hybrid corn. In later
years it was used to custom dry corn and then in 1998 ceased all operations.
In the winter of 2003 a monumental renovation was approved by the Funk
Family to convert the structure into a stable. It is our privilege to
welcome horse and rider to Timber Creek Stables.
The building began its renovation from the original seed corn drying
facility to a superior horse stable in the Summer of 2004. There
were 32 seed corn drying rooms each measuring 10’x 20’, which
conveniently converted into the current horse stalls.
Air tunnels that are constructed completely of concrete were once used
to force heated air into each room to dry the corn. The lower tunnel
now provides fresh water plumbing to Nelson automatic waters, and allows
for convenient delivery of hay and grain. The upper tunnel serves as
means for a continuous flow of outside fresh air.
Square windows in the roof were formerly used to fill the 32 rooms with
seed corn. They nicely converted into sky-lights that provide daylight
and fresh air, and allow for individual ventilation control in each stall.
The concrete floors of the drying bins were converted for horse comfort
by placing crumb rubber mattresses on them and covering it with non-permeable
mats made by Pro-Mat.
The existing building was then connected to a new FBI building measuring
90’w x 208’l which houses office space, bathrooms, a tack
room, cross ties, a heated wash rack, and a lounge that offers viewing
windows overlooking the 90’w x 176’l indoor riding arena.
Finishing touches to the interior of the facility as well as the addition
of dry lots, new fencing and an outdoor arena continue as we grow and
expand.
Courtesy of the Funk Prairie Home Museum and other contributors, we
have compiled photos to illustrate the history of the Seed Facility. Combined
with snapshots of the renovation, the PowerPoint below has been put together
to demonstrate just how far we have come. Enjoy!
